To seal it up or not to seal it up, attic ventilation that is the question…
Appropriate Attic Venting and Ventilation has become much more important these days. From insulating to weatherstripping in every nook and cranny. We want to keep cool in our homes in the summer, and the cold out in the winter, right? The attic needs to have good ventilation to breathe. There are several kinds of vents that are effective. Such as Whirlybird vents, dormer vents, ridge vents, gable vents, and Soffit Vents. These all fill a purpose in different ways.
In the warmer months, good attic ventilation lowers the attic temperature. This can decrease your home cooling costs. This is true regardless of how much insulation there is in the attic.
In the cooler months, moisture is the most serious concern. The vapor barriers help keep moisture at bay. But there are areas where air can leak in. Such as ceiling light fixtures, exhaust fans, and attic access panels. These can allow unwanted moisture to enter the attic.
When accessing the attic, it’s important to close any openings when done. Also sealing around light fixtures and exhaust fans are helpful as well.
It’s always good to keep an eye on the attic once in a while. And if you see rusty nails or brackets, it may be evidence of a lot of moisture getting into the attic.
