Falls are the leading causes of death each year in the roofing industry, for contractors and homeowners alike. There are many procedures that can be followed to help eliminate your risk of falling.
For performing a roof inspection, review the roof for placement of anchor point and set-up of fall arrest or restraint system. Check the “fall” area around the roof to safegaurd against any impalement hazards. Assess the height, condition and slope of the roof for additional fall protection, if required.
For roof access use the correct heighth ladder, proper ladder set-up and make sure that you have inspected your ladder for any damages, such as loose footings. Be sure ladder is safely clear of any vegetation and that you are anchoring to a solid roof access point, loose gutters should be avoided at all times. You must examine your footing on the roof at all times, noting broken or slipped tiles, crumbled mortar, leaky solar panels and moss growth.
Taking the time to assess your roof thoroughly and paying careful attention to your movements is the best thing you can do to avoid roof accidents.
Informative and accurate.
Accessing the roof is something that only professionals should do on a regular basis. Now of course if you want to do a self inspection then this article highlights some of the safety tips.
One thing I will put out there is that if you are trying to inspect your roof after a storm make sure to have shoes with rubber soles so you can get maximum grip. If you see any water damage or curling shingles, then it’s best to just call a roofing company to get a complete inspection.
